The Legend of Boomer Jack

-- excerpt --

Revisions by Dan Margules
(original draft by Timothy Martin)

The setting is Northern California, 1915. Mr. Fisk is the town dog
catcher. Sara and Tommy are children. They have stolen Fisk's
wagon in an attempt to liberate Sara's dog, Boomer Jack, who has
been captured and locked in a cage in the back of the wagon.

And... ACTION!

Mr. Fisk turns and heads back toward the dog pound.

All of a sudden, he sees HIS OWN WAGON, SPEEDING AWAY.

                                   FISK
                         What the...? Hey!

Fisk barrels after his wagon. He squints to make out who's
               driving...

                                   FISK
                         Sara?

               I/E. FISK'S WAGON - CONTINUOUS

Sara and Tommy BOUNCE up and down in the open seat of Fisk's
wagon. Tommy CRACKS the reins. The horse goes faster.

                                   TOMMY
                         Yee-haw!

This is the most fun Tommy's ever had.

                                   SARA
Do you know what you're doing?

                                   TOMMY
                         I'm helping you, ain't I?

                                   SARA
That ain't what I meant, Tommy.

Tommy steers the wagon around a corner.

Boomer's cage SWINGS out over the side, hanging onto the
wagon by just one hook since Fisk already unfastened the
other hook. It SLAMS against the side of the wagon.

                                   SARA
                         Boomer!

Sara hangs out the front and tries to hold onto Boomer's
               cage.

                                   TOMMY
                         Are you crazy, Sara?

                                   SARA
                         Where are we going anyway?

                                   TOMMY
                         To the train station.

                                   SARA
                         Why there?

                                   TOMMY
You said you wanted to get out of
                         town.

A MODEL-T crosses an intersection in front of the wagon.
Tommy has to SWERVE to miss it.

The jolt knocks Sara out of the wagon. She hangs onto the
swinging cage. Her tiny feet skim the surface of the speeding
ground beneath her until she bends her knees.

                                   SARA
                         Tommy, help me!

                                   TOMMY
                             (to the horse)
                         Whoa!

Tommy pulls on the reins so hard they slip out of his hands.
He's LOST CONTROL of the speeding wagon.

Boomer licks Sara's fingers that are clenched around the bars
               of his cage.

                                   SARA
                         No, Boomer!

Tommy pokes his head around to her side.

                                   TOMMY
I can't stop him. What should I do?

The cage swings Sara out and into a complete 180, slamming
her feet back around into the side of the wagon.

                                   SARA
                         Think of something!

Tommy gets back on the seat, then leans forward. He's gonna
try to pull himself up onto the horse by the tail!

He realizes he'll never reach. He prepares to jump.

                                   TOMMY
                             (to himself)
                         This is stupid.

Before he can make up his mind, the wagon hits a bump and
Tommy falls forward -- he completely misses the horse --

-- and the cage slams into the wagon and crushes Sara's hand
and she almost loses her grip and she tries to pull herself
up with all her strength --

-- and Tommy has landed on the wagon's axle and he clutches
onto it for dear life as the ground rushes past him, inches
below him. As he pulls himself up on top of the pole, he gets
               an idea.

The wagon speeds down hill toward the LUMBER YARD, with Sara
hanging on from the rear, her legs flapping in the wind, and
Tommy hanging on from the bottom.

Tommy tugs and twists at a hitch that couples the axle to the
horse's harness. It starts to give. The wagon wobbles as it
separates ever so slightly, and the pin gets lodged half-way
               out.

               Tommy has to pull harder.

                                   TOMMY
                         SARA, HANG ON!

The horse suddenly veers off the road and weaves the wagon
through a small forest of REDWOODS. The ride gets bumpier.
Tommy has trouble getting a hold of the pin again.

The horse zooms between two trees with just barely enough
room for the wagon to fit through. Boomer's cage sticking out
scrapes a little bark off one of them, making Sara DUCK.

Tommy gets his hands back on that shaky pin. He gives it one
               big YANK. It comes out!

The horse keeps going. The axle plows into the dirt. Clouds
of dust jump into Tommy's face.

The wagon careens off balance and ROLLS OVER into a field of
tall grass. Sara is THROWN into the grass and TUMBLES head
               over heels.

The cage comes loose and CRASHES to the ground, its sides
               BREAKING OPEN.

Boomer leaps out of the cage and SHAKES himself off.

Tommy gets up and dusts himself off. Sara gets up, too.

They hear a TRAIN WHISTLE. In the distance, they see the #12
train just starting to pull out of the lumber yard.

                                   SARA
                         Come on, the train!

Boomer's way ahead of them, already running for it.

Tommy and Sara start to run.

                                   FISK (O.S.)
                             (distant)
                         Are you kids all right?

They turn and see Mr. Fisk running toward them with his rifle
               still in his hand.

                                   SARA
                         Hurry! He's gonna shoot us!

               I/E. #12 TRAIN - CONTINUOUS

Sara, Tommy and Boomer reach the tracks and run with the
train. It's running a little faster than they can.

A flatcar comes along with a ledge just low enough for them
               to jump on.

Sara hesitates for a moment: She hasn't stepped foot on a
               train since...

                                   TOMMY
                         Whatcha waitin' for, Sara? Jump!

                                   SARA
                         Okay, okay.

Sara steps up her pace. She catches up. She closes in. Her
hand reaches out. She grabs on to a bar. Her feet drag for a
second, but she pulls herself up.

She takes a moment to balance herself. She's surprised she
made it. She climbs up onto the horizontal forest of LOGS.

                                   SARA
Come on, Tommy! Come on, Boomer!

               IN THE ENGINE CAB

               Paddy goes over his checklist.

Jonesy feeds an armful of wood into the hungry fire box and
               checks the pressure gauges.

                                   JONESY
                         Pressure's up.

                                   PADDY
Then what are we waiting for, let's
                         get her rolling.

Paddy eases up the throttle and...

               I/E. #12 TRAIN - CONTINUOUS

...she breathes to life, as Sara's car rolls farther and
               farther away from Tommy.

                                   TOMMY
                         I'll never make it.

                                   SARA
                             (shouting)
                         Yes you will!

Tommy aches from running so fast. He's already a whole car
               behind Sara, then two...

                                   TOMMY
                         It's no use.

Tommy gives up and falls in the grass, panting like a dog.

Meanwhile, Boomer easily keeps up with the train's rapid
               acceleration.

                                   SARA
Boomer, don't you give up, too. I'm
only doin' all this for you.

Boomer keeps running at full speed.

Up ahead of him, the engine car enters a large TUNNEL.

Sara turns and sees the tunnel's mouth fast approaching.

                                   SARA
Boomer, there's no more time. You
                         get up here right now!

Boomer keeps going straight, until he finally comes upon a
steep embankment just in front of the opening of the tunnel
that puts him on an even level with the top of the logs.

Boomer rises up the embankment and AT THE LAST SECOND makes a
flying leap right onto the center of Sara's lumber car.

And his landing causes the logs to shift. And Sara and Boomer
               both lose their balance. And...

                                   SARA
                         Duck!

They both flatten out on their bellies just as their car
               shoots into the tunnel.
